David Scott, BMus
After completing his BMus at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, baritone David Scott has embarked on postgraduate research to critically evaluate and define the concept of the Irish Art Song. The term Irish Song is broadly used to describe arrangements and adaptations of folk tunes, as well as original works by both Irish and non-Irish composers. Furthermore many Irish composers who wrote Irish Song Cycles were largely educated in the English School of Composition and their works could therefore be considered English Art Songs. This study will seek to disentangle the issues of national identity and musical composition and assess if there is specific criteria for a song to be considered Irish.
