Barra Boydell Collection

A former lecturer at the College of Music (now DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama), Professor Barra Boydell (b.1947) is one of the leading Irish musicologists and educators contributing to the areas of organology, musical iconography and music in Ireland.

A founder member of the Society for Musicology in Ireland, he donated part of his personal collection of books, theses and scores in 2011 to the reference library of the Society for Musicology in Ireland (housed in the DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama Library). He additionally donated a collection of miniature scores to the DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama Library which are available for loan.

The contents of the collection can be seen here. It reflects Boydell’s interests in historiography, music in Ireland, early music (with an emphasis on the instruments) and the music trade. Of particular interest is the 1896 publication of Grove’s A Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
